How to Care for Your Saree: A Complete Guide
Share
A saree is not just a garment — it is a living textile, woven with intention and worn with grace. Whether you've just brought home a soft Assam Cotton Silk or a breezy Kota Doriya, knowing how to care for it properly ensures it stays beautiful for years, even decades.
This guide covers everything you need to know: washing, drying, ironing, storage, and a few styling notes to help you wear your saree with confidence.
1. Washing Your Saree — Gently Does It
The golden rule of saree care: always read the fabric first. Different weaves have different needs.
Cotton Silk & Assam Cotton Silk Sarees
- Hand wash in cold to lukewarm water (never hot — it weakens the silk fibres).
- Use a mild, pH-neutral detergent or a dedicated silk wash. Avoid regular detergents with enzymes or bleach.
- Soak for no more than 5–10 minutes, then gently swish — do not scrub or wring.
- Rinse thoroughly until the water runs clear. A final rinse with a few drops of white vinegar helps restore the sheen of silk.
- For the first wash, test for colour bleeding by dipping a corner in water. If the colour runs, dry-clean instead.
Kota Doriya & Kota Silk Sarees
- Kota weaves are lightweight and open-textured — they are relatively easy to care for.
- Hand wash in cold water with a gentle detergent, or opt for dry cleaning if the saree has heavy zari work.
- Never machine wash — the open weave can snag or distort in a machine drum.
Semi-Silk & Tissue Sarees
- These are best dry-cleaned, especially if they have metallic threads or intricate borders.
- If hand washing, use cold water and handle with extreme care — tissue fabric is delicate and can tear when wet.
When in doubt, dry clean. It is always the safer choice for heirloom-quality weaves.
2. Drying — Shade Is Your Saree's Best Friend
- Never wring a wet saree. Instead, gently press out excess water between two clean, dry towels.
- Dry in shade, not direct sunlight. UV rays fade colour and weaken silk fibres over time.
- Lay flat on a clean surface or drape over a smooth rod — avoid thin wire hangers that can leave marks.
- Allow to dry completely before folding or storing. Even slight dampness can cause mildew.
3. Ironing — Low Heat, High Care
- Iron on the reverse side of the saree to protect the surface sheen.
- Use a low to medium heat setting — the silk or cotton-silk setting on your iron.
- Place a thin cotton cloth between the iron and the saree for an extra layer of protection, especially on zari borders.
- Never iron directly over embroidery, sequins, or metallic work.
- Steam ironing works beautifully for removing creases from Kota and cotton-silk sarees without direct contact.
4. Storage — Fold It Right, Keep It Bright
How you store your saree matters as much as how you wash it.
- Fold along different lines each time you store the saree. Folding in the same place repeatedly creates permanent crease marks and weakens the fabric at those points.
- Wrap in soft muslin cloth (not plastic bags, which trap moisture). Muslin allows the fabric to breathe.
- Store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space away from direct light.
- Place neem leaves or cedar blocks nearby to deter insects naturally — avoid mothballs, which can stain and leave a strong odour.
- For silk sarees, avoid storing in contact with other fabrics for long periods, as colours can transfer.
- Air your sarees every few months, especially during the monsoon season, to prevent mustiness.
A saree stored with care is a saree that lasts a lifetime — and beyond.
5. Styling Tips — Wear It Your Way
Caring for your saree also means knowing how to wear it in a way that honours the fabric.
- Cotton Silk sarees are ideal for daytime events, office wear, and festive occasions that call for elegance without heaviness. Pair with a contrast blouse in a complementary earthy tone.
- Kota Doriya sarees are perfect for summer — their open weave keeps you cool. Style with minimal jewellery to let the fabric speak.
- Assam Cotton Silk sarees have a natural lustre and drape beautifully. They work well for both casual and semi-formal occasions.
- Use a saree pin at the shoulder pleat to keep the pallu in place without pulling the fabric.
- Avoid heavy bags with rough straps that can snag delicate weaves.
